Description:
Abstract: This dataset contain all of the 1:20 000 scale index contour information converted from the Provincial Digital Base Mapping Project.
Purpose: A contour is a line that provides the user with a measure of elevation above mean sea level. Each contour line represents the same elevation value along its entire length. This is a subset of the contour dataset containing only the index contours.
Supplemental Information: These contour arcs are a cartographic product and they do not have any elevation values attributed to the spatial features. These contours require the use of elevation text to properly interpret the elevation value of a specific contour. Index contours are identified every 5th contour line. For Alberta, the index contour intervals occur every 50 metres in relatively flat terrain and every 100 metres in mountainous terrain. Currently, no contour information exists for Banff, Jasper and Wood Buffalo National Parks and also for the Extreme north east portion of the province.

Other Citation Details: These contour arcs are a cartographic product and they do not have any elevation values attributed to the spatial features. These contours require the use of elevation text to properly interpret the elevation value of a specific contour. There are two major types of contours, index contours and intermediate contours. Index contours are identified every 5th contour line. For Alberta, the index contour intervals occur every 50 metres in relatively flat terrain and every 100 metres in mountainous terrain. Intermediate contours are contour lines that occur between the index contours. For Alberta, the intermediate contour intervals are every 10 metres in relatively flat terrain and every 20 metres in mountainous terrain. Where elevation change is sudden, intermediate contours may be deleted and only index contours are shown. Currently, no contour information exists for Banff, Jasper and Wood Buffalo National Parks and also for the Extreme north east portion of the province.
Native Dataset Format: SDE Feature Class
Data Quality Information:
Logical Consistency Report: The index contour lines within this dataset are consistent with the capture specifications of the Provincial Digital Base Mapping Project Specifications and Procedures Manual April 1, 1988.
Completeness Report: This dataset does not provide complete provincial coverage. All of the National Parks, (with the exception of Elk Island and Waterton), and NTS Blocks 74L, 74M, and a portion of 84P, do not have index contour coverage.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Ninety percent of all well-defined features shall be positioned within five (5) metres of their true position. No features will be displaced by more than seven (7) metres from their true position.
Quantitative Horizontal Positional Accuracy Assessment:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Value: 7.0 metres
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Explanation: The error for this dataset has been statistically reviewed. At the 90% confidence interval the corresponding error value is 5 metres. At the 99% confidence interval the corresponding error value is the maximum allowable error which is 7 metres.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: The accuracy of the contour is such that 90% of the elevations checked are accurate to within five (5) metres, relative to stereo model control. No elevation is in error by more than eight (8) metres relative to stereo model control in areas not obscured by vegetation.
Quantitative Vertical Positional Accuracy Assessment:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Value: 8.0 metres
Vertical Positional Accuracy Explanation: The error for this dataset has been statistically reviewed. At the 90% confidence interval the corresponding error value is 5 metres. At the 99% confidence interval the corresponding error value is the maximum allowable error which is 8 metres.
