Description:
Abstract: This circa 1985 Landcover/Landuse dataset of actual features was produced under the "Alberta Environment Geospatial Database for Existing Oil Sands Industrial Features" project funded by Alberta Environment and Parks. The geographical extent covers active oil sands projects with the Lower Athabasca Planning Region in the mid 1980s. The source data included satellite imagery, conservation and reclamation reports submitted by oil sands operators, aerial photography and a series of ancillary GIS data supplied by Alberta Environment and Parks. The disturbance, clearing and reclamation data is a geospatial version of the information presented in annual conservation and reclamation reports (reports submitted to Alberta Environment and Parks through Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) approvals). Under their EPEA approval, operators are specifically required to report on historical activities related to disturbance and reclamation.
Purpose: The purpose of this dataset is to obtain oil sands landcover / landuse status for natural, cleared, disturbed and reclaimed features within an approved oil sands mine project development area. The purpose of the dataset was to obtain oil sands disturbance and reclamation features derived from current and historical data.
Supplemental Information: Most of the industrial features (excluding the ISO classifications) were captured directly from the orthorectified aerial photography. Supplemental data such as the Digitally Integrated Dispositions (DIDs), and base features data were used to assist with the interpretation of features. Cutblock data from ALPAC and the crown were also used.Refer to the enclosed Methodology document from Hatfield Consultants for details on the processes used to create this dataset.

Process Description: The data was dissolved on the Land Cover 1 and 2 classifications and clipped to the project boundaries. Polygons less than 100 square metres were eliminated into the largest neighboring polygon. The project boundaries were then unioned into the dissolved data to recreate the project areas inside the data that was lost during the dissolve. The PDF Name, Map Name, Geo Tiff Name and data source fields were added back to the data with 255 characters. The original source information for each of the fields were then concatenated for each dissolved polygon and added to the appropriate field.

Attribute Domain Values:
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: 01 Natural
Enumerated Domain Value Definition: Includes all lands within the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) approved footprint which remain with natural biological and geological characteristics and for which clearing, disturbance or reclamation activities do not apply. For submissions as required for annual Conservation and Reclamation reporting, areas remaining "natural" do not have to be designated at a detail beyond natural. For data associated with Life of Mine Closure Plan submissions, a predisturbance (year = 0000) and a postdisturbance (closure year = 9999) landcover simplefeatureclass should be developed which identifies polygons with attributes of site type, ecosite and ecosite phase - wetland class (Note predisturbance data is reported in the natural table, postdisturbance reclamation targets are reported in a reclaimed table). These are the 4 coded domain values which link to the natural table. On an annual basis, identification of natural polygons can be all areas not affected by clearing, disturbance or reclamation activities.

Enumerated Domain Value: 02 Cleared
Enumerated Domain Value Definition: Includes all areas where vegetation has been removed for the purposes of preparing the land for drainage, soil removal, overburden removal, mining, etc. but where soil has been left mostly intact and relatively undisturbed. May include any or all of: tree removal, shrub removal, grubbing (stump removal).
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Environment and Parks
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: 03 Disturbed
Enumerated Domain Value Definition: Includes all areas where at a minimum, soil has been removed or covered by other materials and soil would be required for reclamation purposes. This category includes all areas where soil removal, overburden removal, active mining, discard placement, material storage, etc. has occurred. End Pit Lakes remain in the disturbed category for now.
