Organic soils consist of layers of material with greater than 30 percent organic matter and a total thickness of greater than 40 cm. Organic soils are generally saturated with water for most of the year unless drained. Saturation inhibits decomposition and encourages continued accumulation of organic material. Drainage of these soils can result in a rapid increase in decomposition and a reduction in the thickness of the organic material. This resource was created in 2002 using ArcGIS. purpose: To show where organic soils occur, which is important since special management may be required on these soils. Agricultural production is limited an organic soils. They are usually deficient in phosphorus, potassium and many micronutrients. Where cereal crops are grown an organic soils, copper deficiency is commonly seen in the corp. Additions of copper sulfate to the soil can correct this deficiency. Specific soil management techniques such as drainage, using forages in rotation or establishing permanent cover will enhance agricultural production on these soils. status: MD_ProgressCode: completed resourceMaintenance: MD_MaintenanceInformation: maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode: asNeeded descriptiveKeywords: MD_Keywords: keyword: Alberta type: MD_KeywordTypeCode: place descriptiveKeywords: MD_Keywords: keyword: soil types keyword: peat soils keyword: soil health type: MD_KeywordTypeCode: theme thesaurusName: CI_Citation: title: Agrovoc date: CI_Date: date: 2016-01-21 dateType: CI_DateTypeCode: revision citedResponsibleParty: missing descriptiveKeywords: MD_Keywords: keyword: Downloadable Data thesaurusName: uuidref: 723f6998-058e-11dc-8314-0800200c9a66 resourceConstraints: MD_LegalConstraints: useConstraints: MD_RestrictionCode: license otherConstraints: Your use of this information will be governed by the terms of the Open Government Licence - Alberta, in force as of the date you accessed the information , found at http://open.alberta.ca/licence resourceConstraints: MD_LegalConstraints: accessConstraints: MD_RestrictionCode: otherRestrictions otherConstraints: To access the data you must agree to the terms of the Open Government Licence - Alberta found at http://open.alberta.ca/licence resourceConstraints: MD_LegalConstraints: useLimitation: Distribution Liability: Under the terms of the Open Government Licence - Alberta, the Information is licensed as is, and the Information Provider excludes all representations, warranties, obligations, and liabilities, whether express or implied, to the maximum extent permitted by law.
