Description:
Abstract: The wet areas mapping collection contains hydrological data derived from airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) data. The collection includes synthetic stream lines and depth to water estimates. Flow direction and flow accumulation surfaces are also included.
Purpose: The primary purpose of this dataset is to identify the potential presence of wet areas which may be sensitive to disturbance. Early identification of these features in the planning process should contribute to achieving goals related to land stewardship and sustainability. This product was initially developed to assist Alberta's forest sector in ensuring the sustainability of sensitive wet areas and aquatic habitats.

Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: The accuracy of wet areas mapping model outputs (e.g. predicted stream lines, depth to water estimates) are dependent on the quality of the airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) bare-Earth digital elevation models (DEM) from which they are derived. As an intermediate step in the wet areas mapping process, predicted stream lines are generated to approximate locations of potential flow channels. These predicted stream lines are used as a "zero reference", where water is predicted to likely occur at ground surface, and depth to water estimates are then generated across the landscape relative to these "zero reference" lines. As such, depth to water index values are expected to be more accurate as they approach the locations of predicted stream lines. Soil wetness can vary by widely over time, so depth to water estimates are best interpreted as a dimensionless index representing hydrological risk.
