Abstract: The Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) Polygons is a quarter section-based vegetation inventory that covers the southern part of Alberta. The native prairie is defined in the Native Prairie Conservation Action Plan as an area of unbroken grassland or parkland dominated by non-introduced species, and an area of previously broken grassland that has reverted back to natural vegetation (30 to 60 years). The Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory extends beyond the Grasslands Natural Region to include data for adjacent areas, such as the Cypress Hills. In addition to the Grassland Natural Region, the Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) Polygons include areas that belong to the Foothills Parkland, Central Parkland, Montane, Dry Mixedwood Boreal and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions.

Abstract:
The Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) Polygons is a quarter section-based vegetation inventory that
covers the southern part of Alberta. The native prairie is defined in the Native Prairie Conservation Action
Plan as an area of unbroken grassland or parkland dominated by non-introduced species, and an area of
previously broken grassland that has reverted back to natural vegetation (30 to 60 years). The Native
Prairie Vegetation Inventory extends beyond the Grasslands Natural Region to include data for adjacent
areas, such as the Cypress Hills. In addition to the Grassland Natural Region, the Native Prairie Vegetation
Inventory (NPVI) Polygons include areas that belong to the Foothills Parkland, Central Parkland, Montane,
Dry Mixedwood Boreal and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions.
Purpose:
The purpose of the project is to complete classification to a quarter section resolution for native prairie
vegetation percent cover within the Grassland and Foothills Fescue Natural Regions in southern Alberta.

Statement:
This database covers the original Public Lands Southern Region of 1993, the Grassland Natural Region, the
Alberta Environmental Protection Prairie Corporate Region of 1998 and the 2001 Foothills and Addition /
Crown Update. The quarter section grid that forms the base of the Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory
(NPVI) polygons extends well beyond the quarter sections that were inventoried. The quarter sections
that contain native prairie information are identified under the Native Prairie Vegetation Class (NPC)
field as polygons with non-zero values. Aerial photography was initially used to classify native
vegetation cover classes within the Prairie Region. Ground truthing and local knowledge of the District
Fish and Wildlife and Agriculture Food and Rural Development personnel were also input into the process.
The data are described by quarter section in terms of Crown ownership from Land Status Automated System
(LSAS), Native Prairie Vegetation Class (based on percent cover) and Cover Type (shrubland, graminoid,
lake, riparian, treed, wetland), total percent native vegetation and Natural Subregion as well as
grazing status. Generally anything not disturbed by man is considered to be native. Areas of active
erosion (often south-facing slopes in river valleys) with no visible signs of vegetation were not
considered to be native vegetation as they are essentially devoid of vegetation. This inventory was
initially produced from tabular databases generated from interpreted 1:30 000 and some 1:40 000 scale
aerial photography for the years 1992 and 1993. The inventory initially covered the Grassland Natural
Region. Additional inventory was undertaken to compile areas adjacent to the Grassland Natural Region
within the Foothills and Montane Natural Regions (outside of Waterton Lakes National Park and within the
Prairie Corporate Region) in 2001. Updates to the Crown Lands for the entire area, and the Tax Recovery
Lands in the Special Areas from the Municipal Affairs office in Hanna, were also performed that year. A
separate extraction from the spatial coverage as it existed in 1999 was created and distributed as the
Grassland Natural Region Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory. This version of the database includes
grazing-related land use dispositions extracted from the Land Status Automated System (LSAS). Areas
within the Counties of Mountain View and Rocky View that had not been interpreted were captured in 2003.
Six native cover types were captured as a percent cover for each quarter section: SHRUB - Native
shrublands GRAMINOID - Native grasses LAKE - Lake / reservoir RIPARIAN - Riparian zones TREED - Native
trees WETLAND - Wetlands The Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) Polygons data, index map and
associated documents are available from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development,
Government of Alberta.
