Abstract: In 2002 the Alberta Geological Survey initiated a project to scan and digitize water well geophysical logs from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) water well data holdings. Casual and summer student staff scanned hard copy logs systematically by NTS mapsheet starting with the Cold Lake area. Scanned logs were digitized into Log ASCII Standard version 2 by Divestco Ltd. This data release consists of 8,763 LAS files, comprised mostly of resistivity logs, and a tab delimited index file. About 1% of the LAS files also contain a natural gamma log. The API number (APIN) in the log header refers to Alberta Environment's water well identifier number used at the time the logs were digitized. There are 205 records where the API number starts with 900. We were unable to confidently match the log file surface location to an AENV location for these records. The approximate aerial coverage is from latitude 49 degrees to 56 degrees N and from longitude 110 degrees to 120 degrees W. This work concluded in March, 2007.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy
Measure description:
Evaluation method description:
The horizontal positional accuracy is variable. The well location information that accompanied the paper
logs was provided in Alberta Township System (ATS) coordinates. We attempted to refine these locations
by correlating the log location with the ESRD water well database. In some cases additional information
in the database allowed us to refine the location to within a foot. In other cases we could only
determine from the water well drillers report which ATS section the well was located within. The
information in the LAS headers was captured by summer students from hard copy water well driller reports
that reside with the hard copy geophysical logs. Inaccurate locations may exist in the original log
records or may have been generated by data entry errors in the creation of the LAS file. No checking of
the locations was done.

Vertical Positional Accuracy
Measure description:
Evaluation method description:
The vertical positional accuracy is variable. Many of the ESRD files had no elevation data provided. We
have generated elevation data for many of these by plotting the location against the Geomatics Canada 3
arc-second Digital Elevation Model (DEM). As the horizontal location accuracy is variable (see
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report section) the vertical position accuracy is equally variable. 83
LAS files have no vertical reference information. The information in the LAS headers was captured by
casual and summer student staff from hard copy water well driller reports that reside with the hard copy
geophysical logs. Inaccurate elevations may exist in the original log records or may have been generated
by data entry errors in the creation of the LAS file. No checking of the elevations was done.

Statement:
The data set includes all the LAS files from water wells in the ESRD hard copy files to 2007, for the

Description:
The source data are hard copy borehole geophysical logs from water wells drilled in Alberta and housed
at Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) office at 9920 108 street, Edmonton,
Alberta. Between 2002 and 2007 casual and summer student staff under Alberta Geological Survey (AGS)
and ESRD guidance systematically located hard copy logs from ESRD files, starting with the Cold Lake
area of Alberta.
The logs were scanned to create Tagged Image Format Files (tiff). Log header information was manually
captured onto a form developed by AGS staff. The scanned logs along with the log header information
forms were sent to Divestco Ltd in Calgary for digitization into Log ASCII Standard (LAS) version 2.
The digitized logs were copied to CD's and mailed to AGS from Divestco. The logs were then vetted and
imported to AGS data holdings.

Description:
Geographic and UTM coordinates were calculated and added to the water well records by AGS staff.
Ground elevations based on interpolation into the Geomatics Canada 3 arc-second DEM were also
generated in many cases where original elevation information was missing.

Description:
An in-house application was used to select and export these geophysical logs from AGS data holdings to
a release folder.
The application that generated the Log ASCII Standard (LAS) files also created an index file,
containing metadata for the extracted LAS files, and a file describing the column headers in the
index file. The information in the second file was used to create the Entity and Attribute section
of this metadata record.
We edited the index file to remove redundant, erroneous and calculated data fields as follows:
Column name - Description - Reason for deletion
GC_Reso - horizontal resolution - unknown calculation
SeCrd - GC_Reso standard error - unknown calculation
TTME - 10TM location - incorrect
TTMN - 10TM location - incorrect
GndElS - Ground elevation standard error - unknown calculation
KBElS - KB elevation standard error - unknown calculation
VRElS - Reference elevation standard error - unknown calculation
MVRES - Reference elevation standard error - unknown calculation
SitID01 - AGS internal reference - redundant
SI1_Cmt - AGS internal reference - redundant
SitID02 - AGS internal reference - redundant
SI2_Cmt - AGS internal reference - redundant
SN1_Cmt - AGS internal reference - redundant
SitNM02 - AGS internal reference - redundant
SN2_Cmt - AGS internal reference - redundant
TdL_M - Total depth in metres - redundant – calculated field
We then converted the index file to a tab separated value format. The index file, WWLas_Locs.txt, is
included as part of this digital data release.
The header sections of the LAS files were edited to remove the same fields that were removed from the
index file and to correct some minor errors.
