Abstract: This grid dataset is part of the three-dimensional (3-D) hydrostratigraphic model of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin in the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor, central Alberta. It represents the net-to-gross sandstone ratio distribution within the Paskapoo Formation - Middle Composite Slice of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin. The Middle Composite Slice is one of three distinct geological domains identified in the Paskapoo Formation of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin model. Characterization of net-to-gross sandstone ratio distribution within the Paskapoo Formation provides information about the geological heterogeneity and potential hydraulic connectivity within the formation for input into a groundwater flow model. Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Open File Report 2014-10 includes a full description of the process used to produce the net-to-gross sandstone ratio grid.

36 discrete wedge-shaped slices were created through the Paskapoo Formation to divide the formation into
three distinct geological domains based on the continuity of coarse-grained materials. The vertical
positional error of the net-to-gross sandstone distribution for the Middle Composite Slice in the
Paskapoo Formation is a function of the errors in the subset of the slices that make up the composite
slice. Data from oil and gas wells that have errors in kelly bushing (KB) elevation may be included in
the incorrect slice, affecting the calculated net-to-gross sandstone distribution of each slice, and
consequently, altering the net-to-gross sandstone distribution calculated for the merged slice used to
create the three geological domains within the Paskapoo Formation.

Formation utilized available digital downhole gamma-ray logs from oil and gas wells collected after
November 1, 2006. The data from these wells were used as the geophysical logs were run through
surface casing and have log coverage to within 20 m of surface. The sections of the digital
gamma-ray logs collected through surface casing were normalized to remove the effects of logging
through casing. The gamma-ray logs run below surface casing were also normalized and merged into a
single normalized gamma-ray log with the cased borehole segments. 2415 normalized digital gamma-ray
logs were used to calculate the net-to-gross sandstone ratio for the Paskapoo Formation - Middle
Composite Slice.
To calculate the net-to-gross sandstone ratio for the Paskapoo Formation - Middle Composite Slice, all
oil and gas well data in the study area were used to define the geometry and thickness of 36
wedge-shaped slices propagated up through the Paskapoo Formation. Using Petra software the
net-to-gross sandstone ratio was interpolated for 36 wedge-shaped slices and histograms were created
in Microsoft Excel to facilitate comparison between slices. These data were compiled into three main
groups. The Paskapoo Formation - Middle Composite Slice merged slices 11-17 and the resulting 21 473
projected picks with x,y,z and net-to-gross sandstone values were imported into ArcMap for
interpolation.
