Abstract: This grid dataset is part of the three-dimensional (3-D) hydrostratigraphic model of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin in the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor, central Alberta. It represents the structure top of the Paskapoo Formation - Middle Composite Slice of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin. The Paskapoo Formation is a highly heterogeneous system. To satisfy the needs of a groundwater flow model, internal characterization of rock properties was necessary to partition the formation into three distinct geological domains. The Middle Composite Slice is the middle of these three domains. Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Open File Report 2014-10 includes a full description of the process used to produce this structure grid.

The methodology used to create this grid dataset is fully documented in AGS Open File Report 2014-10.

Data Input and Grid Creation:
Data used for the analysis included available oil and gas wells in the study area, which were used to
create 36 wedge-shaped near horizontal slices through the formation, propagated from the base of the
Paskapoo Formation to the bedrock topographic surface. The 36 wedge-shaped slices each correspond to
a net-to-gross sandstone map. The net-to-gross sandstone maps for each slice were merged into three
main geological domains based on natural geologic patterns and similar overall net-to-gross
sandstone values. The Paskapoo Formation - Middle Composite Slice merged slices 11-17 to create one
net-to-gross sandstone map for the middle geological domain.
The grid node elevation value from slice 17 was taken as the top of the Paskapoo Formation - Middle
Composite Slice (grid created in Petra). Geographic coordinates (x,y) as well as elevation data (z)
were sampled at each evenly-space grid node and imported into RockWorks15 for integration into the
full hydrostratigraphic model.
