Alberta ArcHydro Phase 2 Data
Abstract: The Alberta ArcHydro Phase 2 Data was developed to support the delineation of catchment areas in the province of Alberta. It was generated using a DEM which had the Base Stream and Flow Representation (Single Line Hydrography Network) burned (excavated) into it. The data is divided into eighteen major basins across Alberta using an ArcHydro ID to relate the datasets.

Data Quality Information:
-
Positional Accuracy:
-
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
-
Quantitative Horizontal Positional Accuracy Assessment:
-
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Value: +/- 100 metres on derived streams
-
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Explanation: The Agree DEM was created by burning the Base Stream and Flow Representation (Single Line Hydrography Network) into the provincial 100 metre DEM. However, the floods of 2013 will have dramatically changed the flow of some rivers and streams and this accuracy may be lower in areas impacted by flooding.
-
Quantitative Horizontal Positional Accuracy Assessment:
-
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Value: +/- 2000 metres
-
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Explanation: This accuracy value is an untested estimate. Inaccuracies in the DEM and Base Stream and Flow Representation (Single Line Hydrography Network) used in the creation can have a significant impact on the position of the catchment boundaries in flatter areas of the province. The ArcHydro data should not be used for large scale watershed mapping.
-
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
-
Quantitative Vertical Positional Accuracy Assessment:
-
Vertical Positional Accuracy Value: Unknown
-
Vertical Positional Accuracy Explanation: The DEM is a fully filled DEM based on the provincial 100 meter DEM. The fill levels will drastically affect the accuracies of the DEM.

The Alberta Provincial Digital Elevation Model has five components: the Alberta Provincial Terrain, the Alberta Provincial 25 Metre Raster, the Alberta Provincial 100 Metre Raster, the Alberta Provincial 25 Metre Hillshade and the Alberta Provincial 100 Metre Hillshade. The purpose of the Alberta Provincial Digital Elevation Model dataset is to provide a representation of the land surface for the province that can be displayed and analysed alone or with other data. The Alberta Provincial Terrain can be used as it currently exists or integrated with other, more detailed elevation data to generate slopes, aspects, contours and rasters (grids). The Alberta Provincial Rasters can be used to create hillshades (shaded relief), delineate height of land and identify depressional areas. The rasterized elevation data can be used with other rasterized data, such as imagery, for land cover classification. The Alberta Provincial Hillshades can be colourized to create hypsographic tints (painted relief) for visual display.

Title: Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 90M DEM
-
Source Citation Abbreviation: Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 90M DEM
-
Source Contribution: The NASA Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) has provided digital elevation data (DEMs) for over 80% of the globe. This data is currently distributed free of charge by USGS and is available for download from the National Map Seamless Data Distribution System, or the USGS ftp site. The SRTM data is available as 3 arc second (approx. 90m resolution) DEMs. A 1 arc second data product was also produced, but is not available for all countries. The vertical error of the DEM's is reported to be less than 16m. The data currently being distributed by NASA/USGS (finished product) contains "no-data" holes where water or heavy shadow prevented the quantification of elevation. These are generally small holes, which nevertheless render the data less useful, especially in fields of hydrological modeling
Dr. Andy Jarvis and Edward Guevara of the CIAT Agroecosystems Resilience project, Dr. Hannes Isaak Reuter (JRC-IES-LMNH) and Dr. Andy Nelson (JRC-IES-GEM) have further processed the original DEMs to fill in these no-data voids. This involved the production of vector contours and points, and the re-interpolation of these derived contours back into a raster DEM. These interpolated DEM values are then used to fill in the original no-data holes within the SRTM data. These processes were implemented using Arc/Info and an AML script. The DEM files have been mosaiced into a seamless near-global coverage (up to 60 degrees north and south), and are available for download as 5 degree x 5 degree tiles, in geographic coordinate system - WGS84 datum. These files are available for download in both Arc-Info ASC2 format, and as GeoTiff, for easy use in most GIS and Remote Sensing software appications. In addition, a binary Data Mask file is available for download, allowing users to identify the areas within each DEM which has been interpolated.

Logical Consistency Report: The Base Stream and Flow Representation (Single Line Hydrography Network) input data was modified using local knowledge from hydrologists to correct the stream network in some areas where it was inaccurate.
