Abstract: This is a linear footprint dataset for the Castle region of Alberta. This dataset was created to support spatial analyses of linear footprints in the Castle region for the Alberta Environment and Parks report entitled "Ecological Response to Human Activities in Southwestern Alberta: Scientific Assessment and Synthesis" which can be found at https://open.alberta.ca/publications/9781460135402 . The dataset compiles information from four of the most current Government of Alberta and public linear footprint data sources. All linear footprints are grouped into five categories using attribution from input data sources. These include: paved roads; gravel roads; unimproved roads, unclassified roads, and truck trails; pipelines and powerlines; and cutlines and trails. Please note: this legacy dataset will not be updated. For questions regarding the data, please contact AEP.Data@gov.ab.ca.

Explanation:
A topology check was performed to verify that there were no overlaps, and that no duplicate lines were
included in the dataset.

Statement:
This dataset was created using a compilation of four linear footprint datasets. These included: the linear
footprint dataset created for the Oldman Watershed Headwaters Indicator Project (2014); Global Forest
Watch Canada's linear footprint dataset for the proposed Castle Parks (2016); the designated trail
network dataset for the South Saskatchewan Region (2017); and Alberta Environment and Parks' trail
inventory for the Castle Parks (2016).
Process step:
Process step:
Description:
Four shapefiles were used to create a linear features dataset for the Castle Parks area to facilitate
spatial summaries and analyses as a part of this scientific review:
1) Linear features dataset created by Fiera Biological Consulting for the Oldman Watershed Headwaters
Indicator Project:
Data sources for this shapefile included 2012 Government of Alberta base features, a 2012 SRD interim
dataset of cutlines, and unmapped linear features digitized by Fiera Biological Consulting using
2012 aerial imagery. See page 65 in the following report for more information:
Fiera Biological Consulting Ltd (Fiera). 2014. Oldman Watershed Headwaters Indicator Project – Final
Report (Version 2014.1). Edmonton, Alberta. Fiera Biological Consulting Report #1346.
2) Designated trail network for the South Saskatchewan Region (from AB Parks)
3) Global Forest Watch Linear features for the proposed Castle Parks (2012)
4) Trail inventory data from Laurier Lefebvre (2016)
The linear features dataset created by Fiera Biological Consulting for the Oldman Watershed Headwaters
Indicator Project was used as the starting dataset from which to build from.
To include attributes for designated trails, all features from the master dataset that were designated
trails were deleted. Designated trails with attribution (from the SSR designated trail network) were
then joined to the master dataset.
Additional unique linear features from Global Forest Watch Canada’s 2012 linear feature dataset were
also added, along with key attributes, to the master dataset. This step was done manually to ensure
that duplicate records were not introduced. If part of a segment was unique, the segment was split
to only bring in the unique portion.
If lines were adjacent, the ESRI basemap was used to visually inspect the data to determine if there
were indeed parallel trails (e.g. a trail along a road).
Finally, a topology check was performed on the master dataset to ensure that no duplicate records or
overlapping features occurred. The final dataset was clipped to the Castle Parks boundary.

Linear Footprints in the Oldman Watershed (2014): This dataset was created by Fiera Biological
Consulting to inform the Oldman Watershed Headwaters Indicator Project. It includes features from:
Alberta base features datasets (roads, pipelines, powerlines, rail lines, and cutlines); Government
of Alberta OHV trail inventories; and linear features digitized by Fiera biological using 2.5 m
resolution SPOT imagery.

Canada to inform their report entitled "Bulletin 2 - Linear Disturbance in the Castle". It includes
features from: the National Roads Network for Alberta; the Government of Alberta's Designated Trails
of the Castle pre-flood (2013); ABMI's Human Footprint Inventory (2012); and linear features
digitized by Global Forest Watch Canada using a combination of 2.5 m resolution SPOT imagery and
