Abstract: This dataset provides the point locations of horse bands as they were observed during aerial surveys in 2019 and 2021. Each Equine Management Zone is surveyed once per year using helicopter and horses observed on the landscape are reported. Data is stored in file geodatabase, feature class format with associated attributes, meaning each point has a number of horses observed and age class. This dataset simply reports the horses counted on the landscape at one snapshot in time. This data also depicts the flight track flown during the 2019 and 2021 aerial minimum counts. Surveys are flown by helicopter once per year when suitable conditions permit. Areas are typically flown by grid pattern within high density areas and over known horse locations. In low density areas, preferred habitat are flown. For additional methodology information and results from prior years please visit https://www.alberta.ca/feral-horse-management.aspx

Abstract:
This dataset provides the point locations of horse bands as they were observed during aerial surveys in 2019
and 2021. Each Equine Management Zone is surveyed once per year using helicopter and horses observed on the
landscape are reported. Data is stored in file geodatabase, feature class format with associated attributes,
meaning each point has a number of horses observed and age class. This dataset simply reports the horses
counted on the landscape at one snapshot in time. This data also depicts the flight track flown during the
2019 and 2021 aerial minimum counts. Surveys are flown by helicopter once per year when suitable conditions
permit. Areas are typically flown by grid pattern within high density areas and over known horse locations.
In low density areas, preferred habitat are flown. For additional methodology information and results from
prior years please visit https://www.alberta.ca/feral-horse-management.aspx
Purpose:
This data depicts the physical observation of horses on the landscape during the 2019 and 2021 aerial counts
as well as the flight track flown. The data collected during annual minimum count surveys provides important
information to monitor the minimum number of horses currently present on the landscape.

Features: uuidref: The positional accuracy of individual points contains a degree of error. Survey methodology has the helicopter circle the band rather than fly or hover directly over top of them which would result in much more disturbance for the horses. Using the flight track, captured waypoints, high resolution aerial imagery, photos of the animals depicting the habitat they were observed in and information collected on the data collection sheet points are able to more accurately placed over the habitat type the horses were initially observed in. If there is not enough information to place the point in a more accurate location the waypoint taken in the helicopter is used. This approach allows us to balance the goals of disturbing the animals as little as possible while still collecting data with reasonable accuracy.
