Abstract: This dataset defines the ecological areas of Alberta known as the Natural Regions and Natural Subregions, as defined in 2004/2005. This dataset is intended to allow for the stratification of the province of Alberta based on ecological criteria. Natural Regions are the largest mapped ecological units in Alberta’s classification system. They are defined geographically on the basis of landscape patterns, notably vegetation, soils and physiographic features. Natural Subregions are subdivisions of a Natural Region, generally characterized by vegetation, climate, elevation, and latitudinal or physiographic differences within a given Region. The intended scale of use of this product is 1:250 000. This version is 2005 Final. Linework changes from the previous Natural Subregion delineation are due both to better information and refined subregion definitions. Note that the Athabasca Plain subregion has been moved into the Boreal Natural Region and that the Boreal Highlands has now been split into Lower and Upper. Data quality info:

Data quality: Scope: Scope: Hierarchy level: Scope code: dataset Lineage: Lineage: Statement: The 2005 Natural Regions and Subregion classification was developed through a review process that involved representatives from four provincial government departments (Sustainable Resource Development, Alberta Environment, Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, and Community Development) and the federal government (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada). Input from others in the public and private sector was solicited and incorporated where possible. Please see the accompanying report for a complete description of methodology: https://albertaparks.ca/media/2942026/nrsrcomplete_may_06.pdf Process step: Process step: Description: Data have been rectified to Alberta Township Survey (ATS) 4.1, using a "dissolve" of the Seed Zones of Alberta polygons (already rectified to ATS 4.1), by Natural Subregion Name. No polygon values were changed in this process; however, line work of some polygons along the provincial boundary has been adjusted slightly, for agreement with the ATS 4.1 provincial boundary polygon. The number of Alpine subregion polygons has decreased from 276 to 274 as a result of these minor adjustments. Rationale: Reconciliation with ATS version 4.1 Date and time: 2016-06-30T00:00:00 Process step: Process step: Description: Data reconciled with adjustment to provincial boundary in the vicinity of Deadman Pass. No polygon values were changed in this process; however, line work of some polygons along the provincial boundary has been adjusted slightly, for agreement with the provincial boundary polygon. Rationale: Agreement with provincial boundary polygon Date and time: 2022-06-28T00:00:00
