Abstract: The Historical Watershed Boundary Maps consists of the watersheds printed colour maps within Alberta that were delineated as part of the Phase 3 Forest Inventory program. The maps have been scanned in black and white as well as colour. This product can be viewed on a computer, printed or plotted in part or in whole. All available maps are provided in Adobe PDF and Tif format sorted by the National Topographic System (NTS) 1:50 000 and 1:250 000 blocks within downloadable WinZip files. This series is not updated and contains a range of publication dates and scales. Approximately 2/3 of the series is currently available; the rest of the Historical Watershed Boundary Maps are missing. These will be scanned and added to the collection if they become available. These maps are not available as geo-referenced rectified images or GIS-ready data.

These maps are not available as geo-referenced rectified images or GIS-ready data. Purpose: The Historical Watershed Boundary Maps were originally created to assist in management of Alberta's forests. Through the use of the maps and the accompanying data, forest resource planners in the government and the private sector were able to make sound resource management decisions using drainage basins as a base. Data quality info:

Data quality: Scope: Scope: Hierarchy level: Scope code: dataset Report: Conceptual consistency: Measure description: The Historical Watershed Boundary Maps currently cover most of the Green Area of the province as well as the White Area in the north. Wood Buffalo National Park is not covered in this map series. Most of the area is covered by blocks of NTS 1:50 000 scale mapping. There are some blocks of NTS 1:250 000 scale maps, which may not be as finely delineated. The blocks of 1:50 000 scale maps have been delineated to the 6th level for watersheds (Ocean Drainage / Major River Basin / Basin Subdivision / Watershed / Minor Watershed / Sub-Watershed). Many of the blocks of 1:250 000 scale maps have been delineated only to the 4th level for watersheds (Ocean Drainage / Major River Basin / Basin Subdivision / Watershed). Report: Completeness omission: Measure description: Only about 2/3 of the delineated mapsheets are currently available. The rest are missing and will be added if and when they become available. Report: Quantitative attribute accuracy: Measure description: The attribute accuracy is unknown. Report: Absolute external positional accuracy: Measure description: The positional accuracy is unknown. Lineage: Lineage: Statement: The Phase 3 Forest Inventory Program commenced in 1970 and the initial data collection was completed in 1984 as per a 1966 federal-provincial task force recommendation that a provincial forest inventory should be completed before private company timber harvest quotas came up for renewal in 1986. The inventory was initiated by the Alberta Forestry, Lands and Wildlife Department and was intended to facilitate future forest management plans and the revision of annual allowable cuts. The final 1:15 000 Phase 3 Forest Cover Maps include watersheds transposed from 1:50 000 NTS contour maps. The scale difference increased the watershed drainage detail and accuracy, thus a certain amount of re-interpretation was necessary when the cartographic staff transferred the data with most of the changes occurring at the finest (6th) level. This caused some changes in the coding sequence. Additional details can be found in the document "Watershed Coding Sequence for Phase 3 Forest Inventory Area" listed as a cross-reference.
