Abstract: The Hamlet dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Hamlets in Alberta. The formation of a Hamlet can occur if there are 5 or more buildings used as dwellings with a majority of which are on parcels of land smaller than 1850 square metres, has a generally accepted boundary and name and contains parcels of land that are used for non-residential purposes. Hamlet is an unincorporated community that can be designated by the council of Municipal District or Specialized Municipality within their boundaries, or by the Minister of Municipal Affairs within the boundaries of an Improvement District.

Data quality info:

Data quality: Scope: Scope: Hierarchy level: Scope code: dataset Lineage: Lineage: Statement: Hamlet boundary polygons were collected from rural municipalities by the Information Services (IS) team of the Municipal Services Division within Municipal Affairs. Importing the geospatial data from municipalities with GIS capabilities was straightforward, however, when spatial files could not be provided to the ministry, the IS team digitized the information supplied by the municipality. A new ‘geocode’ was assigned to new hamlets within the Ministry’s Stakeholder Information Management System. All verified and confirmed hamlet boundaries were merged into one feature class. The ministry then provided a digital export of both the shapefile and pdf maps to municipalities to confirm these changes. Though hamlet boundaries were verified, they may have been created using local cadastral data which may deviate slightly from the Government of Alberta cadastral fabric.
