Abstract: Alberta Environment and Protected Areas developed an Interior habitat indicator for the province of Alberta. The indicator is the percentage area outside of a set distance from human footprint, and can be calculated for the entire province or a specific area where human footprint data are available. This dataset provides values for all Hydrologic Unit Code 8 (HUC 8) watersheds in Alberta for 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The distance at which an area was considered interior habitat was estimated using rounded buffers from the edges of the wall-to-wall Human Footprint Inventories produced by the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI).

Abstract:
Alberta Environment and Protected Areas developed an Interior habitat indicator for the province of Alberta.
The indicator is the percentage area outside of a set distance from human footprint, and can be calculated
for the entire province or a specific area where human footprint data are available. This dataset provides
values for all Hydrologic Unit Code 8 (HUC 8) watersheds in Alberta for 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The
distance at which an area was considered interior habitat was estimated using rounded buffers from the edges
of the wall-to-wall Human Footprint Inventories produced by the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute
(ABMI).
Purpose:
The Interior Habitat Indicator is intended to estimate the amount of habitat that lies outside the range of
ecological influence of human footprints. The indicator supports evaluation and reporting on habitat
conditions over time and provides information to support regional and sub-regional planning.

Statement:
The Interior habitat indicator can be used to support regional and subregional planning initiatives. A
single 200m buffer was used except when there was a linear feature less than 20m wide, or when the human
footprint was a forest harvest area. Narrow linear footprints (less than 20m wide) were buffered
according to this formula: 200 * (0.25 + 0.75 * (footprint_width/20)). Harvested forest areas were
buffered based on their age. If the area was harvested less than 60 years ago, the buffer was 200 * (1 -
age/60). If the area was harvested between 60-80 years ago, no buffer was applied. Areas harvested more
than 80 years ago were removed as footprints entirely.
