Abstract: This dataset evaluates the sandstone-hosted uranium potential of Alberta. An Alberta Geological Survey database of oil and gas well logs were queried to identify wells with gamma values greater than 300 API (American Petroleum Institute units). An algorithm written for this analysis queried more than 48 000 gamma ray logs from more than 22 000 wells. Of those, 11 476 readings greater than 300 API, within the upper 500 metres, were found in 6176 wells. We selected 1318 wells, verified the anomaly and determined rock types using a combination of gamma, density and resistivity logs. This dataset is associated with Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2009-0012.

Abstract:
This dataset evaluates the sandstone-hosted uranium potential of Alberta. An Alberta Geological Survey
database of oil and gas well logs were queried to identify wells with gamma values greater than 300 API
(American Petroleum Institute units). An algorithm written for this analysis queried more than 48 000 gamma
ray logs from more than 22 000 wells. Of those, 11 476 readings greater than 300 API, within the upper 500
metres, were found in 6176 wells. We selected 1318 wells, verified the anomaly and determined rock types
using a combination of gamma, density and resistivity logs. This dataset is associated with Alberta
Geological Survey Open File Report 2009-0012.
Purpose:
To assess the possibility of using oil and gas well logs to identify anomalous radioactivity and to identify
the formation and probable rock types within the anomalous gamma values, which will help in evaluating
sandstone-hosted uranium potential.

Measure description:
The dataset contains tabular data consisting of unique records for each individual well. All spatial
locations were checked for uniqueness. Some attributes contain null values. Under column heading
Depth_Second_Peak in tbl_Gamma_Ray_Logs -9999 indicates no value. Under column heading
Second_Peak_Formation, "Not Determined" indicates where values were not determined . The formation names
for anomalous gamma readings were taken from the ACCUMAP database.

Description:
An Alberta Geological Survey database of logs from oil and gas wells was queried to identify wells
with gamma values greater than 300 API (American Petroleum Institute units) using in-house software.
Due to the large number of wells with anomalous readings, one or two wells from a cluster of wells
were selected and checked individually in the ACCUMAP raster logs database to identify rock type and
formation. The following information from the ACCUMAP logs was compiled in the dataset: well
identification number, NTS map area, location co-ordinates (latitude and longitude), maximum gamma
value, depth to the first anomalous gamma reading, depth to the second anomalous gamma reading,
formation name for first anomalous gamma reading, formation name for second anomalous gamma reading,
and probable rock type within the first anomalous gamma reading.
