Abstract: This GIS dataset is a compilation of existing surficial map information for Alberta tiled into one layer. It was an interim product to produce the generalized polygon dataset (Alberta Geological Survey DIG 2013-0002), which is suitable for presentation and use at 1:1,000,000 scale. We prepared the data by appending existing GIS datasets of each surficial map of Alberta into one provincial layer with a standard attribute table. Data sources included published Alberta Geological Survey and Geological Survey of Canada maps, one master’s thesis, and ecological (biophysical) land-classification maps of the mountain parks. When possible, we transferred all of the legend data from each map source into the standard schema. As part of our 1:1,000,000-scale map project, we completed mapping the unmapped areas of Alberta at roughly 500,000 to 1,000,000 scale. This dataset includes those previously unpublished data. With this dataset users can, for the first time, view the surficial geology of different map areas done at different scales and map projections by different geologists according to different legends in one GIS layer. We exported the feature class as an Esri shapefile (SurfMosaic_py_ll.shp) for public distribution. The layer file 1M_scale_legend.lyr is also included for the convenience of Esri software users (version 9.2) to render the map according to the common legend shown on Alberta Geological Survey Map 601.

There are gaps and slivers between separately mapped areas and no effort has been made to edgematch adjacent polygons between the source datasets. Parts of Alberta were mapped by more than one geologist, so more than one map is available, though usually at different scales. We appended these redundant datasets so that no overlaps were created. For mapped areas that overlapped, we used the following hierarchy from highest to lowest priority: Alberta Geological Survey Maps 207, 213, 150 and 148; Geological Survey of Canada Maps 1937A, 1939A, and 1941A; and all remaining sources. Lakes were not consistently mapped among the data sources and no attempt was made to digitize them after tiling the data together. If they were digitized in the source, they were preserved and coded as 'Lake' in the MAP_LABEL attribute. Process step: Process step: Description: To produce this dataset, we combined digital versions of 62 existing and several newly mapped areas into an Alberta-wide GIS dataset. We processed the data as follows: 1. Finalize input data: This involved proofreading and, where necessary, correcting datasets that were digitized by third parties (i.e., not a dataset produced through publication of an Alberta Geological Survey map). 2. Create a standard provincial schema to house all original map attributes (legend information) and the new generalized reclassification (MAP_LABEL). 3. Create lookup tables for each map: These lookup tables allowed us to reclassify the original map unit to a standard, 14-unit legend (MAP_LABEL) for each input map. The lead geologist (M.M. Fenton) completed this reclassification. Many of the existing maps were created with different legends resulting in different schemas, or attribute table structures, when digitized. Each of these attributes, such as genesis, topographic relief, unit name, thickness, lithology, map label, geological age, and unit description, was also mapped into the new standardized schema for this dataset. The lead GIS analyst (E.J. Waters) completed this task. 4. Append datasets: We used FME Workbench to append the data using the lookup tables to map attribute data from each source GIS file to the target attribute in the destination feature class.
