Grassland Vegetation Inventory (GVI)
Abstract: This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata on how to acquire this dataset.
The Grassland Vegetation Inventory (GVI) represents the Government of Alberta's comprehensive biophysical, anthropogenic and land-use inventory of the southernmost portion of the province's White Area. The compilation of the inventory commenced in 2006 in the southeast corner of the province using digital colour-infrared stereo photography. Data capture has proceeded north and west.
The Grassland Vegetation Inventory is intended as an update to the Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) that was completed circa 1993. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory product is a more comprehensive and detailed geospatial representation of land cover that is intended to meet a multitude of business needs integral to land-use planning and management in Alberta. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory is a biophysical and land-use inventory rather than a purely vegetation inventory. It is comprised of ecological range sites based on soils information for areas of native vegetation and general land use for areas of non-native vegetation, namely those associated with agricultural, industrial, and residential developments.
Landscape Polygons are the basic map units in the Grassland Vegetation Inventory digital product. These polygons represent interpretations of relatively uniform biophysical or anthropogenic areas. The characteristics of Landscape Polygons are captured as records in the Sites table. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory site type classification is captured under the Site Types column in the Sites table to a maximum of four site types per Landscape Polygon. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory site types and their associated information plus the data capture methodology are described in the Grassland Vegetation Inventory Specifications.
Grassland Vegetation Inventory projects were initially funded under the Base Data Acquisition component of the Land-use Framework program, which represents the Alberta Government's comprehensive and integrated approach to land use planning and management. The primary funding agency is Alberta Environment and Parks.
The GVI data, index map, status map, views and specifications documents are available from Alberta Environment and Parks, Government of Alberta.

-
Purpose: There are increasing economic, social and ecological pressures on our native grasslands. This inventory will be a superior stratification tool for Public Lands and resource managers to ensure effective and sustainable use and allocation of these grasslands for the benefit of all Albertans. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory also facilitates wildlife habitat assessments, especially for species at risk. Land use decisions can be made with greater confidence using Grassland Vegetation Inventory data, particularly when minimization of impact on the native prairie is important.

Supplemental Information: The Grassland Vegetation Inventory dataset is a normalized dataset consisting of three feature classes, two relationship classes and two tables. The feature classes consist of a polygons: LANDSCAPE_POLYGONS, a polylines: LINEAR_VEGETATION and a points: POINT_VEGETATION. Each record in the LANDSCAPE_POLYGONS attribute table is linked to one to four records in the SITES table by the LANDSCAPE_POLYGONS_1M_SITES relationship class. Each record in the SITES table is linked to an unlimited number of records in the VEGETATION table by the SITES_1M_VEGETATION relationship class. The LANDSCAPE_POLYGONS feature class is not intended to be used independently of the SITES table and the VEGETATION table.

Attribute Value Accuracy Information:
-
Attribute Accuracy Report: Some attributes are collected in an explicit manner. Other attributes have been captured through interpretation by trained personnel using digital stereo aerial photography. As such, some attributes are subjective in nature and others more objective.
-
Logical Consistency Report: Coded value domains and subtype dependency are used to control valid attribution. Some logical relationships between attribute values are maintained by automated routines and auditing processes. Topology is maintained for polygon and line geometry. Auditing is done by sampling new data for correctness in terms of geometry and attribution prior to acceptance. Some discrepancies between the updated Base Features Hydrography Polygons and the Grassland Vegetation Inventory waterbodies have been noted and these issues have not yet been corrected.
-
Completeness Report: The Grassland Vegetation Inventory data collection area extends slightly beyond the Grassland Natural Region. Approximately 90% of the Grassland Vegetation Inventory data collection area has been captured and loaded. The collection of points and lines is not consistent and is under review. Updates to the existing data have not yet been scheduled.

Prior to the release of the Grassland Vegetation Inventory specifications version 5.3, the data were validated using the GVI Tools software package that performed structural and logical validation checks. With the development of the Grassland Vegetation Inventory specifications version 5.3, most of the structural and logical validation is as part of the geodatabase schema. Some additional checks are performed using GVI Tools version 5.4. While the use of these tools minimizes issues, some data problems still exist.

Process Step:
-
Process Description: Photo-interpretation of Grassland Vegetation Inventory spatial and attribute characteristics using a softcopy system and digital stereo imagery. The GVI Validation Tool was used to ensure logical and structural quality in the data, which has been largely collected under contract. In the early stages, the data were captured into an ESRI Personal or File Geodatabase using ArcGIS. Interpretation was performed according to the specifications outlined in Grassland Vegetation Inventory Specifications Version 3. The hydrography was supplied as part of the Land-use Framework Hydrography Polygons updates, which preceded the capture of Grassland Vegetation Inventory data in the area.
More recent data collection, as per Grassland Vegetation Inventory Specifications Version 5, utilizes the creation of contractor and in-house replicas and versions that update the repository directly. The hydrography was not captured before the Grassland Vegetation Inventory capture and has not been supplied to the contractors as part of Grassland Vegetation Inventory data capture. The intent is to generate the updated hydrography after.

Process Description: The data are loaded into the Grassland Vegetation Inventory GENESIS Edit environment. For data collected using the old data model (prior to 2010/2011) a custom data loader was used to translate and validate the data to conform to the new specifications.
Currently, new data are loaded directly into the Spatial Database Engine repository utilizing versions and replicas. After the new data have been validated and issues resolved, the replicas are synchronized with their associated versions and the versions are reconciled and posted to the Spatial Database Engine repository.
