Abstract: The Town dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Towns in Alberta. Town is a municipality type defined under the authority of the Municipal Government Act. The formation of a Town can occur if a majority of buildings are on parcels of land smaller than 1850 square metres and there is a population of 1000 or more.

Supplemental Information:
Towns in Alberta are defined by Orders-in-Council. Besides name, each town has a numeric identifier (i.e. 0387
for Banff) designated by Alberta Municipal Affairs documented in the Municipal Codes. The Municipal Codes
document also contains the number of Alberta municipalities by type (i.e. City, Improvement District, etc.).
Altalis Ltd. is the designated agent of Alberta Data Partnerships Ltd. (ADP) who provides the monthly update
of the Town shape file to Alberta Environment and Parks, if there are changes commencing Nov. 2005.

Description:
The latest MS Excel spreadsheet of the Municipal Codes is downloaded from the Alberta Municipal
Affairs website and converted to dBase III format. The Town table (TOWN_NAME and TOWN_CODE) of the
Base Features Geoadministrative Areas Specification, is updated according to the Altalis Ltd.
Municipal Boundary Change Tracking spreadsheet, and converted from MS Word to dBase III format. The
original source Town Shape file received from Altalis is processed to obtain a formatted Shape file
preserved with the same original spatial accuracy. A 2nd process is then run to obtain polygons
attributed according to the Base Features Geoadministrative Areas Specification Town table standard
(i.e. TOWN_NAME and TOWN_CODE). The formatted shape polygon attribute values are validated against
the Municipal Codes with the TOWN_NAME normalized with upper/lower case according to the Base
Features Geoadministrative Areas Specification Town table.

Description:
Source data was ADP Municipal Boundary Town shape file. Names were populated according to the Base
Features Geoadministrative Areas specification standard. Nanton, Stettler and Wembley had
intersection issues which did not get loaded. As there were no boundary update differences since
last Base Features Town version, and as a quick workaround, these 3 towns were taken out from the
previous departmental Alberta Data Partnerships Town layer and loaded into Town shape layer. As
these 3 towns were compiled to the Base Features Geoadministrative Areas specification standard, and
thus had slight geometric variation from the most recent boundary representation in the ADP Town
shipment.
