Abstract: This data set comprises the bedrock geology of Alberta in geographic information systems (GIS) format. The GIS coverage was originally prepared by digitizing Map 027, 1972, Alberta Geological Survey, Alberta Research Council. Revisions since 1972 have incorporated new mapping data from work by the Alberta Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Canada, and by the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists through the contribution of its membership to the Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The coverage shows the formation and geologic age of the bedrock subcrop, as well as the nature of the contacts between formations. GIS files are distributed as shapefiles of bedrock polygons (geol_py_ll.shp), bedrock line features (bdrk_ln_ll.shp), and bedrock contacts (geol_ln_ll.shp).

Entity and Attribute Information

Other citation details:
Bedrock geology is maintained in ArcInfo coverage format, and is written out in shapefile format for
public distribution. The coverage stores attributed bedrock geology polygons (*.pat) and their geologic
contacts (*.aat). Formations with areal extent too limited to be depicted by polygons are maintained in
a line coverage. Shapefiles written for distribution are named, respectively, geol_py_ll.shp,
geol_ln_ll.shp, and bdrk_ln_ll.shp. <p> Bedrock geology polygon attributes include AGSGMNUM (a numeric
code which allows sorting of records in stratigraphic order); ERA (text, geologic era to which rock unit
belongs); PERIOD (text, geologic period to which rock unit belongs); EPOCH (text, geologic epoch to
which rock unit belongs); FORMATION (text, full formation name); SYMBOL (text, map symbol for formation
name). AGSFMNUM is an eight-digit hierarchical numeric code that uniquely identifies stratigraphic units
in various information systems at the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS). Its purpose is to allow digital
records to be searched, sorted and grouped stratigraphically. The eight-digit numeric code comprises two
parts. The first three digits form the stratigraphic age code (see Table 1 for the domain of values),
where the first digit identifies the geologic era, the second digit identifies the geologic period, and
the third digit identifies the geologic epoch. The last five digits comprise a unique 'geological
formation number' (GEOLNUM, see Table 2 for complete list of domain values). Existing GEOLNUMs and/or
equivalents have been incorporated into the AGSFMNUM from other information systems, where applicable.
GEOLNUMs with values less than 09999 correspond to formation codes in the AGS well database; GEOLNUMs
ranging from 10000 to 10999 correspond to formation codes in the AGS coal database. 'New' GEOLNUM's,
i.e. for formations not listed in either the AGS well database or the coal database, are assigned with
eleven-thousand series numbers. Table 2 illustrates the AGSFMNUM hierarchy.

Description:
The Geological Map of Alberta 1972-edition served as the basis for this coverage. It was scanned and
vectorized to produce an ArcInfo coverage. The coverage was cleaned and labeled with the geological
formation symbols. Later, other attributes were added including colour code, and time and
stratigraphic codes.
Updates to the geology were done based on work by the Geological Survey of Canada in southern Alberta, by AGS in the Canadian shield and Birch Mountains/Fort McMurray area. Coal resources data done by EUB was integrated into the coverage, and the Swan Hills gravels were added.
A new map legend was developed consistent with the master stratigraphic reference chart established for the Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The map legend was expanded to include revised lithologic descriptions.
