Abstract: This GIS dataset covers the four types of decontamination zones for whirling disease in Alberta, and identifies the inherent risk categories for each. These boundaries are to be used by Government of Alberta field staff and industry, as described in the Alberta Decontamination Protocol for Watercraft & Equipment. (1) Confirmed Red Zones are zones with CFIA confirmed positive testing for whirling disease and are based on a 'HUC 10' level as found in the Hydrologic Unit Coded Watersheds of Alberta dataset. Irrigation Red Zones are similar to confirmed red zones, however are based on Irrigation District boundaries and only apply to irrigation canals. (2) Yellow Zones represent high to moderate risk for the introduction/spread of whirling disease due to one or more of the following criteria: susceptible salmonid species present, high recreational activity/use and access to water, and high population base. (3) White Zonesdo not have any confirmed cases of whirling disease and represent lower risk due to lower population base and less activity/use.

Abstract:
This GIS dataset covers the four types of decontamination zones for whirling disease in Alberta, and
identifies the inherent risk categories for each. These boundaries are to be used by Government of Alberta
field staff and industry, as described in the Alberta Decontamination Protocol for Watercraft & Equipment.
(1) Confirmed Red Zones are zones with CFIA confirmed positive testing for whirling disease and are based on
a 'HUC 10' level as found in the Hydrologic Unit Coded Watersheds of Alberta dataset. Irrigation Red Zones
are similar to confirmed red zones, however are based on Irrigation District boundaries and only apply to
irrigation canals. (2) Yellow Zones represent high to moderate risk for the introduction/spread of whirling
disease due to one or more of the following criteria: susceptible salmonid species present, high
recreational activity/use and access to water, and high population base. (3) White Zonesdo not have any
confirmed cases of whirling disease and represent lower risk due to lower population base and less
activity/use.
Purpose:
Whirling Disease (AIS) Decontamination Zones are boundaries created for Government of Alberta field staff in
an attempt to minimize the chance of spreading whirling disease or other Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS).
Whirling disease has no impact on human health, but has become an issue for fisheries management in Alberta.
Infectious whirling disease spores can be transmitted to other waterbodies through fish and fish parts, and
gear or equipment that can transport infected water or mud, and these boundaries represent areas of disease
risk and the level of cleaning required to minimize disease transfer.
AIS Decontamination Zone boundaries adhere to the document "Decontamination Protocol for Watercraft and
Equipment". This Protocol is mandatory for all GOA staff and contractors working in or near water. The
document can be found online at: https://www.alberta.ca/stop-whirling-disease.aspx

Statement:
These zones are based on the HUC Watersheds of Alberta and Irrigation Districts datasets. Red Zones are
HUC 10 watersheds that contain fish samples that tested positive for whirling disease, and Irrigation
Red Zones (that apply only to man-made irrigation canals within the zone) are based on Irrigation
Districts that are adjacent to Red Zones or known areas where the spread of whirling disease is high.

Description:
The Irrigation District dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent the Irrigation
Districts of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (former Agriculture and Rural Development) established
under the Irrigation Districts Act to (a) convey and deliver water through the irrigation works, (b)
divert and use quantities of water in accordance with the terms and conditions of its license, (c)
to construct, operate and maintain the irrigation works and, (d) to maintain and promote the
economic viability of the area.

Description:
The Hydrologic Unit Code Watersheds of Alberta collection of feature classes is intended to define
hydrologic units that form a standardized baseline which covers the province of Alberta.
Successively smaller hydrologic units are nested within larger hydrologic units to create hierarchal
watershed boundaries. These standard units are based on sound hydrologic principles (flow direction)
and have been reconciled between and within the feature classes that form the dataset. Existing high
resolution watersheds or catchment polygons have been collated into larger watershed units to
achieve the hierarchical, nested polygon dataset structure.
