Abstract: This dataset contains an extract of water chemistry data from the Cold Lake - Beaver River Basin project area. The work was completed in 2004 under contract to Alberta Environment (AENV). Information was obtained from industry and government sources. These data are available in three text files, each representing one table in the original database. See the accompanying jpg of the original relationship diagram to understand how the data in the text files tables are related.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy
Measure description:
Evaluation method description:
The easting and northing values were either provided by the data provider, or had to be determined from
the Dominion Land Survey (DLS) location. Where the location was provided by the data provider, the
horizontal position will be more accurate. Where only the DLS location was provided the horizontal
position will be more or less accurate depending on the level of detail provided, (i.e. down to the LSD
level with feet east-west and north-south of a given corner, vs. down to the quarter section level of
detail).

Vertical Positional Accuracy
Measure description:
Evaluation method description:
Vertical positional accuracy will vary depending on whether or not the provider of the data submitted a
ground or top of casing elevation for the well in question. If the elevation was not provided, then a
digital elevation model (DEM) values would have been used for the location. Depending on the accuracy of
the x-y location value provided, the ground elevation value accuracy will be greater or lesser. The DEM
elevation will have an associated error as well of approximately 3 m.

Selection criteria were not imposed on this dataset. No threshold values were used. There will be missing
data where that data was not available from the provider or source of the data. Standards were applied
to the naming of chemical parameters, to elevation values (metres above sea level), depths (metres below
ground surface), northings and eastings (metres, UTM NAD83 Zone 12).

Conceptual consistency:
Measure description:
Sample results from duplicate QA/QC sampling do exist, but they have been flagged. In some cases companies
may not have submitted information on the wells or for certain parameter concentrations or values. AGS
asked for missing data, but were not always provided with the required data. Data checks were performed
only to check that data upload or entry was completed correctly. Additional checks were performed, but
only during the data interpretation and map preparation stages. The various data submitters reported
chemical parameter names differently, the AGS attempted to standardize naming by asking companies what
their names referred to, such as dissolved vs. total concentrations. Where this information could not be
ascertained, the AGS chose the parameter name or class to assign the value to. The AGS has no
information regarding calibration of instruments and their potential effect on concentration or
measurement values. The AGS has no information regarding who collected the data and if different
methodologies were used to collect and process the samples for analysis. The AGS had limited information
on how the analyses or measurements were determined.

Description:
Data entry completed either through direct upload from MS Excel files, or from database files, or from
hard copy manual entry. Model used for data storage was the EarthFX data model. Location, elevation,
depth and chemical concentration data were normalized. Sampling duplicates were appropriately
flagged. Random checks were performed to ensure proper data upload. Any missing information was
requested from the data submitters.
