Abstract: This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Note that the distribution contact is different for the general public than for Government of Alberta ministries. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. The Summer Village dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Summer Villages in Alberta. Summer Village is a municipality type defined under the authority of the Municipal government Act. The formation of a Summer Village can occur if a majority of the buildings are on parcels of land smaller than 1850 square metres and there is a population of 300 or more. Generally same provisions related to a Village apply to a Summer Village except that in the latter, elections and annual meetings are required to be held in the summer. A Summer Village is the only type of municipality where a person can vote twice in municipal elections: once in the Summer Village and once in the municipality where their permanent residence is located. Summer Villages can no longer be created in Alberta.

Purpose:
The Summer Village dataset provides users with GIS ready polygonal representation of all Summer Villages in
the province of Alberta, and is suitable for indexing or analysis purposes.

Supplemental Information:
Summer Villages in Alberta are defined by Orders-in-Council. Besides name, each Summer Village has a numeric
identifier (i.e. 0009 for Argentia Beach) designated by Alberta Municipal Affairs documented in the
Municipal Codes. The Municipal Codes document also contains the number of Alberta municipalities by type
(i.e. City, Improvement District, etc.). Altalis Ltd. is the designated agent of Alberta Data Partnerships
Ltd. (ADP) who provides the monthly update of the Summer Village shape file to Alberta Environment and
Protected Areas, if there are changes commencing Nov. 2005.

Description:
The latest MS Excel spreadsheet of the Municipal Codes is downloaded from the Alberta Municipal
Affairs website and converted to dBase III format. The Summer Village table (SVILL_NAME and
SVILL_CODE) of the Base Features Geoadministrative Areas Specification, is updated according to the
Altalis Ltd. Municipal Boundary Change Tracking spreadsheet, and converted from MS Word to dBase III
format. The original source Summer Village Shape file received from Altalis is processed, using a
Informatics AML, to obtain a formatted Shape file preserved with the same original spatial accuracy.
A 2nd AML is then run to obtain polygons attributed according to the Base Features Geoadministrative
Areas Specification Summer Village table standard (i.e. SVILL_NAME and SVILL_CODE). The formatted
shape polygon attribute values are validated against the Municipal Codes with the SVILL_NAME
normalized with upper/lower case according to the Base Features Geoadministrative Areas
Specification Summer Village table.

Description:
Source data was ADP Municipal Boundary Summer Village shape file. Jarvis Bay had an intersection issue
which did not get loaded. As there were no boundary update differences since last Base Features
Summer Village version, and as a quick workaround, Jarvis Bay was taken out from the previous
departmental Alberta Data Partnerships Summer Village layer and loaded into Summer Village shape
layer. As Jarvis Bay was compiled to the Base Features standard, and thus had slight geometric
variation from the most recent boundary representation in the ADP Summer Village shipment. Names
were populated according to Base Features Geoadministrative Areas specification standard.
