Riparian areas consist of the lands adjacent to streams, rivers, wetlands and lakes that are strongly influenced by the presence of water. They are often distinct from the surrounding landscape as the vegetation growth is very lush. These areas form a transition between dry land and open water and are characterized by the presence of hydrophilic vegetation and specific soil types. Riparian areas are usually very productive in terms of biomass and form critical wildlife habitat. These areas often have standing water and are subjected to periodic flooding when high water levels fill the stream channel to the top of the bank. The term "riparian" is derived from the Latin word for river bank.
Riparian areas provide valuable food, shelter and travel corridors as well as close proximity to a water source for wildlife and livestock. These zones are often densely vegetated and serve as stabilization against the erosive forces associated with lotic systems. Riparian areas provide filtration for surface runoff from the surrounding land and protect the water quality of flowing streams. They trap sediment and reduce the velocity of stream flow, thus reducing erosion in downstream areas. These areas provide detritus to their associated aquatic systems as well as a moderating effect on surface temperatures.
This riparian mapping project is intended to provide a geodatabase feature class of potential riparian areas associated with lotic features (streams and rivers) using the hydrologically corrected provincial digital elevation model as a base. Potential riparian areas associated with lentic features (wetlands and lakes) are not being captured at this time but wide rivers and lakes with flow through must be taken into consideration in order to give a more accurate representation of riparian areas. Isolated lakes are not included and no allowance for cultivated lands has been made.

Purpose: This riparian mapping project is considered to be an overview for the province and is intended to provide a spatial representation of potential riparian areas associated with lotic features (streams and rivers). Where a stream or river passes through a perennial lake, the shoreline of the lake is captured in order to give a more accurate representation of riparian areas. Wetlands and non-perennial lakes as well as source, sink and isolated lakes, are not included. These areas are deemed to be potential riparian areas as no allowance for disturbance has been made.
The purpose of this project is to provide a 1:20 000 scale GIS-ready map of potential lotic riparian areas for the entire province in geodatabase format. This riparian feature class consists of polygons representing the location of lotic riparian areas that have been generated from slopes derived from the Base Features Derived Partially Filled Hydrologically Corrected Digital Elevation Model grid using satellite imagery to determine thresholds for the floodplains. This project was not intended as an air photo interpretation or image classification exercise.
This feature class was created for the purpose of providing a reasonable estimate of riparian areas by Land-use Framework Planning Region (merged into a provincial dataset) and is not intended for use in site-specific management and/or planning within individual land parcels, small watersheds, local government units, or small study areas. For any use of this data outside of the project purpose, it is highly recommended that the data be supplemented with air photo/satellite image analysis and/or detailed field site study.

Attribute Accuracy Report: An accuracy assessment has been completed and full results can been viewed in the document titled "Accuracy Assessment Results for the Government of Alberta's Digital Elevation Model (DEM) - Derived Lotic Riparian Dataset" (see online linkage found in this metadata).
An accuracy assessment was undertaken and completed with the goal of providing data user's a greater understanding of the successes and limitations associated with the spatial mapping of lotic riparian areas across the province of Alberta. Three components of accuracy were assessed as a part of this project, including point, area and linear width accuracy and reported as a function of the overall accuracy assessment as well as by Natural Region (NR). The accuracy assessment is based on the calculation of a number of statistics, including overall accuracy, kappa, riparian user's accuracy, riparian producer's accuracy, non-riparian user's accuracy, non-riparian producer's accuracy, Mapcurves Goodness-of-Fit values, and average difference in linear width. The reference data used in this project was photo-interpreted from 3-D, colour-infrared, high resolution aerial photography.
Overall values for accuracy for the point assessment were determined to be: 78.2% for the overall point assessment; 78.3% for the Boreal Natural Region (NR); 75.0% for the Canadian Shield NR; 82.7% for the Foothills NR; 76.9% for the Grassland NR; 67.8% for the Parkland NR; and 96.6% for the Rocky Mountain NR. For the area assessment overall accuracies were found to be: 80.5% for the total dataset tested; 79.1% for the Boreal NR; 89.0% for the Canadian Shield NR; 87.4% for the Foothills NR; 83.4% for the Grassland NR; 71.4% for the Parkland NR; and 89.4% for the Rocky Mountain NR. These values all exceeded the 65% accuracy threshold set out in the contract specifications for the development of the dataset. In terms of the linear width assessment the riparian dataset was found to be wider than was determined by the photo-interpreted riparian by an average of: 49.3m in the Boreal NR; 52.7m in the Foothills NR; 187.2m in the Grassland NR; 194.6m in the Parkland NR; and 33.6m in the Rocky Mountains NR. Please see the report for a breakdown of all the statistics that composed this accuracy assessment as they cannot all be fully discussed in this section of the metadata.
Overall, the Parkland was found to be the least accurate NR, in comparison to the others, while the Rocky Mountain NR was found to be the most accurate. Although various factors contribute to a reduction in accuracy in any modelled dataset, the abundant anthropogenic disturbance and human urbanization in the Parkland NR are considered the major factors in the discrepancies between the riparian dataset and the photo-interpreted riparian reference data. As the specifications for the development of this dataset did not take into account anthropogenic disturbance factors, areas with high levels of cultivation, urbanization and other anthropogenic influence tend to be over-represented in the riparian dataset relative to what is left for riparian corridors after such development/human influence. Similarly, the Grassland NR was found to have lower accuracy values than some of the other NR's due to high levels of cultivation which have reduced the amount of naturally functioning riparian ecosystems left on the landscape. Conversely, the Foothills, Boreal and Rocky Mountain NR's were found to have high accuracy results. Very good results were likely obtained in these Natural Regions for a number of reasons but a couple of note include less anthropogenic disturbance in the form of urbanization and cultivation and greater topographic changes throughout the NR. While differences were seen between the Natural Regions the overall results of the accuracy assessment exceeded the 65% accuracy threshold set out in the project specifications and reasonable accuracy results were obtained.

Logical Consistency Report: The hydrologically corrected digital elevation model grid has been processed for all of the streams (for which there is spatial information) across the province of Alberta. The topology has been checked for overlapping polygons but has not been checked for intersection with the base stream network or the waterbodies. Islands within large rivers have not been included as part of the riparian layer. Multipart polygons have been exploded to single part. The geometry has been checked and repaired where necessary.

Completeness Report: Riparian areas associated with lotic features have been captured for the entire province of Alberta. Lentic and wetland features have not been captured at this time, unless directly connected to a stream with flow through as per the goals of the dataset.

Process Description: Model input layers. Shorelines for lakes with flow through and the linear stream network are captured. The partially filled hydrologically corrected digital elevation model is used to generate a hillshade, an elevation classification and a slope classification. The hillshade, contours and the elevation classification are used to verify the results. The slope classification is used in the development of a cost surface model. The prototype areas were selected based on Natural Subregions.

Process Description: Model development. Develop a slope / elevation cost surface where the value for each cell in the surface is based on the least accumulated cost of travelling across the surface. Establish the cost surface distance thresholds using imagery to determine if stream order, Natural Subregions and the type of stream are factors. Preliminary model results were overlaid with vegetation data to review the accuracy.

Process Description: Generate preliminary models and then process and assess prototype areas using the slope / elevation cost distance thresholds. Sample points are generated and overlaid with imagery and ancillary data within the prototype areas. The sample points were assessed and the cost classes for the valid riparian points established. The mean cost distance value and standard deviation were determined for each prototype area for the BFD SLN. The final cost distance threshold is established using the mean value plus one standard deviation. The model results for the prototypes were verified using imagery and ancillary data. Stream orders greater than 6 were inspected for validity.

The rest of the Red Deer region and the Lower Peace, Upper Peace, Upper Athabasca, Lower Athabasca, South Saskatchewan and North Saskatchewan regions were processed later as individual blocks of data.

Process Description: The individual areas for the Land-use Framework planning regions were initially processed separately. Multipart features were exploded into singlepart features and the blocks of data were merged and edge-tied to create the final feature class. The polygons in the merged dataset were split by Natural Subregion as the polygons were too large to process. The Natural Region and Subregion names have been captured as attributes. Fields for area (square kilometres) and perimeter (kilometres) were added and calculated in Ten Degrees Transverse Mercator projection North American Datum 1983. All polygons smaller than 5 square metres in area were removed and polygons less than 25 square metres in area that were not the result of a split on a Natural Subregion boundary were also removed from the dataset. The geometry was repaired and the dataset was re-checked for multipart polygons. Topology was created to check for overlapping polygons and validated. The dataset was compacted.
