Abstract: The dataset contains the results of analyses of surface water samples collected by AGS in the summer of 1999. Three lakes, three creeks, one stream and two rivers were sampled as part of a water sampling program carried out by AGS in the Athabasca Oil Sands in-situ area of Alberta. This area extends from approximately 55.34 degrees north latitude to 55.96 degrees north latitude, and 110.5 degrees west longitude to 111.8 degrees west longitude. The datum is NAD83. The dataset contains information on laboratory measured pH and conductivity, major, minor and trace element concentrations, as well as stable isotope ratio values of oxygen and hydrogen. AGS staff collected the samples using a discrete sampling method. The sample bottle was dipped into the surface water body and partially filled with water, rinsed and the water was discarded. The bottle was then filled and capped. The sample was subsequently filtered on site using a 0.45 micron filter. A sample was acidified for minor and trace-element analysis. Separate samples were collected for stable-isotope analysis. The major, minor and trace-element concentrations were determined by Norwest Labs of Edmonton. The stable isotope values were determined by the University of Calgary stable-isotope lab. The data are as they were received from the laboratories. A change in focus for the second year of the program meant much of the data were not included in the final report, and so were not interpreted to any extent. The data have not been processed or modified.

Abstract:
The dataset contains the results of analyses of surface water samples collected by AGS in the summer of 1999.
Three lakes, three creeks, one stream and two rivers were sampled as part of a water sampling program
carried out by AGS in the Athabasca Oil Sands in-situ area of Alberta. This area extends from approximately
55.34 degrees north latitude to 55.96 degrees north latitude, and 110.5 degrees west longitude to 111.8
degrees west longitude. The datum is NAD83. The dataset contains information on laboratory measured pH and
conductivity, major, minor and trace element concentrations, as well as stable isotope ratio values of
oxygen and hydrogen. AGS staff collected the samples using a discrete sampling method. The sample bottle was
dipped into the surface water body and partially filled with water, rinsed and the water was discarded. The
bottle was then filled and capped. The sample was subsequently filtered on site using a 0.45 micron filter.
A sample was acidified for minor and trace-element analysis. Separate samples were collected for
stable-isotope analysis. The major, minor and trace-element concentrations were determined by Norwest Labs
of Edmonton. The stable isotope values were determined by the University of Calgary stable-isotope lab. The
data are as they were received from the laboratories. A change in focus for the second year of the program
meant much of the data were not included in the final report, and so were not interpreted to any extent. The
data have not been processed or modified.

Measure description:
The data were originally contained within an MS Excel spreadsheet. They were subsequently imported into an
MS Access database using a series of update and append queries. In order to release the data as a
digital file, the surface water chemistry data were extracted to the simplified data model used for this
digital data release. The data in the database were checked against the original spreadsheet values in
order to confirm that the values were consistent with the original spreadsheet values. A unique ID was
applied to the samples to avoid any duplication of records. This ID was used to link the location
information table to the chemistry data table. Each ID appears only once. Sampling was conducted by two
field parties. The SS99-* samples were collected by one party and the GJ99-* samples were collected by
the second party. The GJ99-* samples were filtered and prepared for lab submission in the field, while
the SS99-* samples were filtered and prepared for lab submission following daily field activities. There
is one site where a sample for stable isotope analysis was not submitted.

Description:
As part of a project funded by Western Economic Diversification under the Western Economic Partnership
Agreement, the Alberta Geological Survey conducted a water sampling program in the Athabasca
oilsands in-situ area in the summer of 1999. These samples included water well and surface water
samples. The surface water samples were analyzed for chemical, and stable isotopic composition.
These data have not been interpreted or analyzed to any extent whatsoever. They have been input into
an MS Access database from original spreadsheet files. The data from the database file have been
subsequently extracted into a simplified data model for release as a digital dataset.
