Peat Application Area
Abstract: The Peat Application Area dataset depicts available land which may contain peat resources, and the requirement of a peat application in Alberta. Areas where peat exploration is not allowed due to environmental concerns such as the presence of waterbodies and rivers, trumpeter swan lakes, parks and protected areas, key wildlife and biodiversity areas, caribou zones, and HUC 8 watersheds with bull trout and arctic grayling were removed. This generalized product represents areas where a peat harvesting application can be submitted.

Source Contribution: This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. The Key Wildlife and Biodiversity Zone is a combination of key wildlife habitat from both uplands and major watercourse valleys. The basis of this zone was determined using major river corridors, valley topography, valley slope breaks and ungulate winter densities. The Key Wildlife and Biodiversity Zone is intended to prevent loss and fragmentation of habitat; prevent short and long-term all-weather public vehicle access; prevent sensory disturbance during periods of thermal or nutritional stress on wildlife; and prevent the development of barriers to wildlife corridors (e.g., stream crossings). Note that this layer is a consolidation of previous Key Ungulate Areas, Key Ungulate Winter ranges, and Class C - Key Wildlife and Watercourse areas.

Source Contribution: This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public This dataset is comprised of the provincial Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) Range distribution data. The boundaries are derived upon the known ranges of Caribou herds, as determined through historical information, the movements of collared animals (telemetry) and aerial surveys. This new map has been used to communicate the extent of caribou range in the province for important initiatives such as the Alberta cabinet approved Woodland Caribou Policy for Alberta, and the Federal Recovery Strategy for both boreal and southern mountain woodland caribou. This caribou range map will be adopted as the land-use referral map for all land-use applications on April 1, 2013. Beginning April 1, 2013 projects that have received an EPEA approval using the updated Caribou Range map, and all other land use and forestry applications, will use the updated Caribou Range map for required disposition applications

Source Contribution: This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. The Alberta Fish Sustainability Index (FSI) represents the results of a broad-scale, provincial level assessment done on priority fish species. FSI metrics are summarized to classify: population integrity, the productive potential of the habitat, and threats and their mitigation. The Alberta Fish Sustainability Index (FSI) is a tool used to conduct individual fish stock assessments consistently across the province. The index provides a standardized approach for evaluating existing data and assists in identifying the types of field data that should be collected in the future to allow for more robust assessments.

Other Citation Details: SensitiveSpecies.GDB.TRUMPET_SWAN_BUF_POLYGON
-
Publication Date: 20140315
-
Source Citation Abbreviation: Trumpeter Swan Lakes (800m buffer)
-
Source Contribution: This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Trumpeter Swans (Cygnus buccinator) are sensitive to human disturbance, and human activity in breeding areas may cause abandonment, or decrease survival of eggs or cygnets. Trumpeter Swans are listed as a Threatened species under Alberta's Wildlife Act, and as such are afforded protection against hunting and the destruction of nests. This swan buffer layer includes all water bodies as of March 31, 2015 with confirmed breeding swan pairs (i.e., active nests or cygnets) as determined by swan surveys and incidental observations. The entire water body is considered a nesting site and was buffered by 500m and 800m to indicate the variable timing window setback options. Buffers are expressed as a computed 10 TM value. Sites not associated with waterbodies (lotic systems, unmapped wetlands, beaver ponds) were indicated by circular polygons (5m radius) and buffered by 500m and 800m. Accuracy of hydro layers is limiting, and it is recommended that all proponents measure setback distances from the high-water mark.
