Abstract: The Provincial Bison Protection Areas dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Bison Protection Areas in Alberta. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation. All hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. All hunting (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) of wood bison within the Wabasca Bison Protection Area is prohibited. Legal descriptions of the boundaries of Provincial Bison Protection Areas can be found within Schedule 11 of the Wildlife Regulation. The boundaries within the Provincial Bison Protection Areas dataset have been interpreted from written legal descriptions within Schedule 11 of the Wildlife Regulation. In case of discrepancy between GIS data and the written legal description, the written legal description shall take precedence.

Statement:
Bison Protection Area boundaries are delineated using Base Features Source Data, including Wildlife
Management Units (whole or portions of), Alberta Township System (ATS), Hydrography, Access, and land
ownership. Both the Northwest Bison Protection Area and Wabasca Bison Protection Area boundaries are
designated following legal land descriptions appearing within the Wildlife Regulation 11 [and former WR
schedule 6 footnote 1].
Process step:
Process step:
Description:
The designation of wood bison populations as Threatened protects them from hunting in the specified
WMUs by people other than those with Indigenous-specific hunting rights such as Treaty rights. That
is, unless hunting is specifically enabled through issuance of a licence, under the Regulation. The
objective of listing is to protect disease-free populations of wild wood bison and enable
conservation and recovery of wood bison for the benefit of all Albertans. Regulation amendments to
Schedule 11 of the Wildlife Regulation formally designates the existing Northwest Bison Protection
Area and establishes a new Wabasca Bison Protection Area. The designated WMUs included in the Bison
Protection Areas were identified to support conservation and recovery of existing disease-free wild
bison populations and provide a basis for future wood bison recovery, while considering Indigenous
peoples and stakeholder interests and concerns. Boundaries follow appropriate Wildlife Management
Unit boundaries (where possible), roadways, land ownership boundaries as well as natural features
such as watercourses.
